Reddit, AI Search Engines, and Changing Citations

AI Search and Forum Citation: The Short Answer

AI systems draw on forums for training data, and AI Search tools can retrieve and cite forum content in their responses. A typical forum has a structure resembling questions and answers, which makes the material easy for AI Search systems to parse and understand. Forums also have the third-party validation element that AI Search systems value, especially those forums with polling or rating systems for answers. Probably the best known is Reddit, but AI Search also scans others like Stack Overflow, Quora, Hacker News, and GitHub discussions. B2B companies should include a forum strategy in their AI Search marketing, since forums are a source AI Search tools draw on for answers.

Reddit, ChatGPT, and other AI Search

Reddit leads the most studies around AI Search citations, which is not surprising given the platform’s 130.3 million daily active users (Q2 2026). Pinning down typical Reddit activity for AI Search is difficult, because the AI Search engines are not static in what they use for sources or cite. For example, in March of this year, a Peec AI analysis of 30 million sources found Reddit the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews. Yet in August 2026, Promptwatch tracking found a significant drop in Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations, which fell from 3.83% to 0.52% in days. Reddit also has a presence in other LLMs, with an April 2026 Loudmink AI study of 20 B2B SaaS queries finding that Grok accounted for 77% of Reddit citations across the five major AI search engines examined in the study. The same study found that Claude accounted for zero Reddit citations. The variance in Reddit on AI Search serves as a reminder that each LLM uses different sources that change continually. A company should have a diverse plan for forum participation as well as a custom visibility plan for each LLM.

How AI search finds, analyzes, and recommends forum content

When considering a forum presence, it helps to understand how the AI Search gathers information. Most AI Search tools use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): search, pull passages, write an answer, cite what was used. Forums, by nature, mirror this pattern, with a question or thought starting a series of topic-specific answers or comments.

AI Search tools first find the material. The system fans one question out into several sub-queries and retrieves candidate pages for each. The index searched matters, and in a February 2025 study, Seer Interactive found that 87% of 500+ SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top 20 organic search results. Perplexity runs its own crawler plus several providers, which is one reason it surfaces more forum and niche content. Ahrefs found ChatGPT retrieves roughly 16 cited and 16 non-cited URLs per prompt, so many forum threads are read but never shown.

AI Search then analyzes the material. AI Search systems score passages rather than entire pages, and they favor specific and self-contained material. A Semrush study of 248,000 Reddit posts found three patterns:

  • AI paraphrases Reddit discussions rather than quoting them, blending several comments into one answer.

  • Q&A threads account for more than half of Reddit citations, with comparison and discussion threads next.

  • Promotional posts rarely pass the filter. Anything too promotional will get ignored.

AI Search then recommends content. Forums will typically dominate when the question is "which one should I pick,” "is it worth it," or “is x better than y.” In one analysis of 1,000+ B2B SaaS "alternatives" queries in ChatGPT, Reddit drew 12.9% of citations and G2 only 3.0%. The apparent logic is consensus: when several independent users converge on a recommendation, the engine treats it as social cohesion.

Google and Reddit + Citations

On May 6, 2026, Google announced that AI Mode and AI Overviews would highlight firsthand perspectives from Reddit, social media, and web forums. Google’s partnership with Reddit is part of its underlying goal of responding to queries with a mix of information sources. Reddit forums, and community advice in general, are highly valued across a number of different audiences.

How each AI tool treats Reddit

Perplexity leans on forums hardest, and ChatGPT's picture is the least stable. Reported shares conflict because studies count different things (share of citations, share of responses, share of top-50 domains).

Engine Reported Reddit figure What to know
Perplexity 46.7% of top citation sources; 24% of all citations (Jan 2026) Looks for fresh answers and is forum-friendly. A June 2026 Ahrefs snapshot has YouTube ahead at 32.4% and Reddit at 16.6%.
ChatGPT 29.4% of tracked mentions (Ahrefs, 2026); ChatGPT Search citations fell from 3.83% to 0.52% (Aug 2026) Wikipedia led in older datasets. Reddit's share has crashed twice.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode 2.1% and 1.5% of citations after the August 2026 shifts Reddit led some earlier studies. Google now quotes forum posts directly. YouTube (owned by Google) and Wikipedia rank high.
Gemini 0.1% of responses (Tinuiti) vs 27.5% of tracked mentions in another dataset Widest variance in tracked data. More analysis over time will give a clearer picture.
Claude One tracker reports zero Reddit citations and 64% to brand sites Claude did not cite Reddit in the study's sample.

Overlap is low across engines. A 680-million-citation analysis found only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Reddit's citation share is volatile

Returning to looking at Reddit: the platform’s visibility inside ChatGPT has collapsed twice in about a year, and the cause is still debated.

  • September 2025. Trackers saw Reddit's ChatGPT share drop sharply (one report says 29.2% to 5.3%) right after Google removed the num=100 search parameter. Analyst Kevin Indig suggested, with hedging, that this was likelier the cause than any OpenAI or Reddit decision.

  • August 2026. Promptwatch measured Reddit falling from 3.83% to 0.52% of ChatGPT Search citations, an 86.4% relative drop. One theory is a ChatGPT change to how it queries and cites sources, but this has not been verified by OpenAI. One analysis, citing Search Engine Journal, notes the timing does not fully fit: a query change landed August 8 but Reddit's cliff came August 14. A second, unconfirmed theory points to Reddit restricting crawler access.

  • Where citations went. One analysis says they moved to brand sites and review platforms while overall brand visibility stayed largely intact. Google's AI surfaces, however, remained more stable.

Reddit and business verticals

B2B SaaS has the strongest data. Fintech and cybersecurity have decent vendor research. Marketing and AI/ML are thin, so claims there are mostly forum lists, not citation measurements.

Forums for AI Search tools by vertical

Where AI search tools find community signals, by vertical. Sources summarized from Foundation, Octolens, Semrush, 5W, and Profound research.

Reddit Forums by Vertical that Are Popular with AI Search

SaaS

Reddit forums for SaaS that are on AI Search tools’ radar include: r/SaaS, r/B2BSaaS, and r/SaaSDevelopers. In terms of citations, Octolens says 67% of B2B tool recommendations happen in dedicated subreddits. Foundation's Cloud 100 study found six subreddits capture 73% of citations, and weekly contributions correlate with citations (0.84), slightly more strongly than follower count.

FinTech

Reddit forums for this vertical include r/fintech, r/FintechStartups, and r/fintechdev. Semrush found ChatGPT's finance answers favor Reddit over experts.

Cybersecurity

Popular Reddit forums for cybersecurity include: r/cybersecurity, r/cybersecurity_help, and r/hacking. Forums rank behind NIST, CISA, MITRE, Krebs and BleepingComputer. Reddit's weight is rated moderate to high, mainly on Perplexity.

Marketing

Reddit forums include r/marketing, r/DigitalMarketing, and r/MarketingAutomation. AI Search tools value the real-world experience that marketing subreddits provide on different agencies and marketing technologies.

Reddit and Licenses

Reddit licenses data to Google (reported at about $60 million a year) and signed with OpenAI in 2024. It sued Perplexity in 2025 over scraping and had earlier sued Anthropic. Perplexity says it does not train on Reddit and calls the suit a show of force in licensing talks. Access terms, not just content quality, shape what each engine can cite.

Forums beyond Reddit

Other communities show up in specific query types. Several of these claims come from AI-visibility vendors, so treat them as directional.

Communities AI Search tools also use

The five forums beyond Reddit that AI search tools cite: Quora, Stack Overflow, Hacker News, company Discourse forums, and Fandom.

The pattern across all of them: public, indexable, question-and-answer shaped, and dense with firsthand experience.

To note: Subreddit size does not predict citations: Foundation found 30 of 71 Cloud 100 subreddits invisible to AI. And finance and security face a higher trust bar, so engines mix forums with institutional sources instead of replacing them.

Conclusion: Where Reddit Fits In Your Strategy

Reddit should be part of a larger LLM visibility strategy, with the caveat that its presence in AI search platforms will vary. Each AI Search platform relies on forum input to different degrees, so all LLMs have to be analyzed for a true picture. Research suggests contribution activity may matter more than forum size, so an active forum with a smaller audience shouldn't be overlooked.
